(Untitled) Affection
I am curating a show at my Art Space Parenthesis Art Space titled "(Untitled) Affection"
Parenthesis Art Space is pleased to present UNTITLED (AFFECTION), a group show curated by Artist and Chief Curator Luis Martin. This multifaceted exhibition references the work of Artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres as a point of departure to bring together work that explores the implications and manifestations of intimate human connections through art praxis. The show uses none linear narratives of human bonds through performance, photography, sculpture, and poetry, each responding to the lasting weight of human affection.
The exhibition revolved around a sculpture installation of plaster casted bodies cascading off the space’s walls by Sculptor Lauren Goldstein. Unknown yet familiar wedding portraits stair at the viewer in a series of tin transfers by Artist Ryoichi Nakamura. Photographers Matthew Eck and Katharine Finkelstein aim their cameras at themselves in fleeting encounters with “self” and the “other” in two separate projects. The words of poet Soumya Netrabile hide in plain site and reveal themselves under the right light, while a video and stethoscope invite you to an explorative slow dance with performance Artist Alina Rayas.
The Artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres (American, born Cuban 1957-1996) whose body of work was largely untitled, worked in a minimalist and conceptual language to create installations and sculptures that addressed cultural and community activism. The Billboard installation series, which offers context to this exhibition, consisted of a work titled “Untitled” (1991). The work depicted the raw and profound implications of an unmade bed in response to the death of his long time partner who died of AIDS.
